Things to do in Lancashire
Out of all of the things to do in Lancashire, one of the most popular attractions is Blackpool Zoo. The zoo has over 1,000 resident animals, including rarer finds like red pandas, a tiger and sea lions. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is another of Lancashire’s headline locations, and offers 10 roller coaster rides by the sea.
Living in Lancashire is a unique experience for the family. From cruises down the Lancaster canal to backstage tours of the famous Burnley Football Club Stadium, there are plenty of one-of-a-kind experiences on offer that you won’t find anywhere else. Go on the Pendle Witch Walk, invite hawks and owls to your wedding, or take a trip to see the figures at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum.
Lovers of the outdoors will be met with miles of open countryside, from limestone caves to moorland and river valleys. Lancashire is home to the Forest of Bowland National Landscape, an area of outstanding natural beauty covering 312 square miles at the heart of the county.
The county borders the Yorkshire Dales, Nidderdale and the Lake District National Parks, putting four of the most beautiful rural landscapes within reach of a day trip. You can also hike the Saddleworth Moors, walk the Tolkien Trail, or stroll along one of many county beaches. As for shopping, Blackpool, Preston, Lancaster and Blackburn are all hotspots for retail therapy.
Transport in Lancashire
The M6 motorway runs through the centre of Lancashire, heading to Carlisle to the north and Birmingham to the south. The M65, the M55 and the M58 also cut through the county, linking Lancashire to Manchester and Liverpool.
Transport in Lancashire doesn’t stop there, however: the county is served by three major train lines connecting a total of 62 train stations across Lanx towns. The West Coast Main Line, the East Lancashire Line and the Ribble Valley Line run through the centre of the county, operating trains to London, Colne and Burnley.
The Heysham ferry docks are the place to go for boats to the Isle of Man. You can also drive down to Liverpool in Merseyside to catch ferries to Ireland. If you’ve set your heart on a holiday further away from home, Manchester Airport is close to Lancashire, and sends just under 200 flights into the sky every day.
