Things to do in Cheshire

Cheshire is located right next to the Welsh border, beyond which the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape awaits discovery. Close enough for a day trip, the range is made up of spectacular hills around the Dee just downriver of Chester. Other national parks within easy reach of Cheshire include the Peak District.

Culturally, Cheshire shines across the board: from the National Trust sites of Biddulph Grange Garden, Nether Alderley Mill, Dunham Massey and Tatton Park to museums such as the Lion Salt Works and the Grosvenor, the county has plenty of history to discover. It’s also home to the UK’s largest radio telescope, Jodrell Bank, where you can visit a family-friendly science centre based on astrophysics and watch the telescope move in real time.

Cheshire’s crowning glory is Chester Zoo, a major destination for school trips and family holidays across the North West. With over 37,000 animals including tigers, painted dogs, otters, cheetahs and even the rare Andean Bear, the zoo functions as a conservation program and is known for its breeding programs of rare and endangered animals.

For a more adrenaline-filled day, Cheshire is home to Gulliver’s World, a family-friendly theme park located in Warrington. With galleons, roller coasters, dodgems and a dinosaur safari tour, the immersive park is the perfect place to treat the kids to a birthday party or a special day out.

If you prefer a simple shopping outing, Chester’s 2,000 years of trading history make it the perfect spot to visit a market or feed the need for retail therapy at the Grosvenor shopping centre.

Transport in Cheshire

Cheshire transport operates as railway and road links to Manchester, Liverpool and Wales, as well as motorways carrying commuters to the south. As a very central county, Cheshire benefits from access to locations across the UK, and the M53, the M6 and the M62 connect the county to Liverpool, Carlisle, Coventry and Leeds.

Crewe Train Station is the main transport hub of Cheshire, sending trains to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and even London and Glasgow. Even if you live out of reach of Crewe, transport in the North West is notably good, with frequent trains to towns and villages and regular bus services circling almost every locale in the area.

The county offers four park and ride locations to visit Chester, helping you to avoid the traffic of the city centre. Cheshire also connects its rural residents to the public transport network – and any other amenities they need – with the itravel bus service, an on-demand option for residents.
